The mounting challenges derived from the pandemic and economic condition, have hindered and continue to limit MSMEs capability in its upward mobility, lessening participation in economic growth and sharpening inequalities. On the other hand, MSMEs are heavily accounted in many economies as the source of growth, particularly in developing economies. Globally, MSMEs represent about 90 percent of businesses and more than 50 percent of employment. In Indonesia, there are 64.2 million of MSMEs and accounted for 61.07 percent of Indonesia’s GDP and employing around 97 percent of the total national workforce as well as absorbing around 60.4 percent of investment.
Thus, empowering MSMEs seen as key policies and strategies in addressing current challenges and inequalities borne by MSMEs and at the same time strengthening and recovering the economy. Islamic finance has long and deeply involved in developing MSMEs through its various instruments and schemes, commercially and socially. Islamic finance role and application in empowering MSMEs, offer various valuable knowledge, framework and innovation potentially applied in further developing MSMEs. Through empowering MSMEs, it will not only deliver inclusiveness, yet it will also propel stronger growth and productivity.
