About

AIFED (Annual International Forum of Economic Development and Public Policy) is a “melting pot” of policy discussion, designed to bring academics, economists, professionals, and policymakers in one platform to discuss and proffer workable solutions to the most fundamental problems arising in the nation. This forum is organized by the Fiscal Policy Agency of the Ministry of Finance of Indonesia, and has been highly supported by various development partners. AIFED has brought the most sought-after topics in the last decade and has become an important avenue in providing public policy-making inputs in Indonesia since 2011.

The 1st AIFED started with a discussion about the fiscal policy strategy to promote the transformation of capital flow into an investment, especially for infrastructure financing. The forum continued in 2012, bringing up the theme of financial stability, which has successfully encouraged stronger coordination between the Ministry of Finance, BI, OJK, and LPS to maintain financial sector stability. In the following year, with the theme “Avoiding Middle Income Trap” the event has provided important input for the preparation of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2014-2019 and the Financial Note and Budget Plan (NK dan RAPBN) 2014. In 2015, the 5th AIFED aimed to exercise and identify the appropriate revenue, expenditure, and financing policies needed to support longer-term growth and avoid the middle-income trap, bringing up the theme of “Fiscal Reform to Support Strong and Equitable Growth: Striking The Right Balance”.

The 2016 theme on “Unlocking Public and Private Investment” has provided strong support for implementing the asset securitization program to accelerate infrastructure development. The following year, the theme of “Technological Change” has led to intense discussions regarding the current technological issues and their implication to the economy. In 2018, AIFED came up with another theme of “Building for the Future: Strengthening Economic Transformation in Facing Forward Global Evolution”, which provided valuable inputs on the strategy for structural transformation in the Indonesian economy. The subsequent AIFED event in 2019 explored the issues concerning new approaches to enhance Indonesia’s productivity and competitiveness to support higher economic growth. Amid the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 11th AIFED 2021 served as an important forum to look deeper and deliberate the true gems of Indonesian new economic resources. The discussion will take into account potential in the aspects of product, people, place, and a flagship session which concern appropriate policies to promote issues including addressing the prospect of “living with endemic”, adjusting to the transformation of global economic and trade structure, and commitment in promoting green economy.

In 2022, AIFED concentrated on post-pandemic economic policies which aimed to strike a balance between advancing the development agenda and protecting the economy from external shocks, as well as ensuring continued recovery and guide the economy toward strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth. This year, the 12th AIFED 2023 will delve deeper into the post-pandemic challenges, focusing on (1) the trend of geopolitics and how it would shape geo-economics in the future, especially in the scope of trade, investment, and financial sector, (2) climate change as the geopolitics game changer and how to ensure equal and affordable energy transition, and (3) technological development amidst the tech-war amongst pioneer countries.
